Struggles - 1 Thess. - Week 2

main image

We want to welcome each one of you to Union Avenue this morning! If you are a first time guest, would you take just a moment and fill out the information section of your "Order of Worship" and turn it in when the offering plates are passed before my message?

Struggles, we all have them. We struggle as individuals, as a family, in the midst of national crisis and even as a the church. A struggle is a time to reflect, to understand and to learn.

Today our focus will be in 1 Thessalonians 1:2-10 and highlight the fact that the church was genuine, dynamic as well as contagious.  Paul applauded the church for their faith, labor, and the endurance they exhibited from the hope they had in Jesus Christ. In the midst of building the church and overcoming the struggles of the culture the church still choose to lay down idols and follow Christ. Today as we read over this passage consider the following things;

  • What are some idols to which you cling? How do these idols compete with your loyalty to Christ?
  • How are you living for Christ today and do you have hope for tomorrow?
  • What was it like the first time that you truly understood the gospel? How did you respond to the message?

Nothing can separate us...

main image

I am currently sitting in a morning worship with 300+ 3rd-6th graders at Journey Camp.  First off let me say that their level of Worship is contagious and full of energy. Just a few minutes ago the Worship leader lead the children in the singing of Romans 8:31-39. Nothing can separate us...

Think about that for just a minute. Nothing can come between us and our God. Sure when we sin we do cause a "distance" between us and God, but His Love for us does not change. Disappointed, sure but still there is still love.

Read this section of verses;

"And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[b] neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord."

To hear the children "sing" this truth caused me to be reminded of this very thing. Today as you go about your work and/or your household responsibilities remember this very truth - NOTHING CAN SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE OF CHRIST.
