Philippians 4:13

I am able to do all things through Him  who strengthens me.  Philippians 4:13 (HCSB)

Think on Praiseworthy Things (4: 8-9)

  • For Christians to grow in likeness to Jesus, we have to have a renewed mind (Rom 12: 1-2; Eph 4: 23).
  • “To Think About”, means to “take into account carefully” or to “calculate” (v. 8)
  • Once again the theme of imitation appears, and so does the theme of peace. (v. 9)
    • Emulate leaders who think holy thoughts.
    • Emulate leaders who set their minds on their Creator and Redeemer.

Thank God for the Generosity of Other Believers (4: 10)

  • Once again, the apostle is rejoicing! This time he adds the adverb “greatly.”
  • Paul conveys his gratitude in a triangular fashion, between himself, the Philippians, and the Lord.

Contentment (4: 11-13)

  • While he’s grateful for the Philippians’ faithfulness, he doesn’t want to come across as a poor beggar, and he doesn’t want them to misinterpret his joy.
  • Christian contentment is about believing that Christ is enough. Contentment was rare in Paul’s day, and it is rare in ours.
  • Contentment is learned. (v. 11-12)
  • Contentment is learned through exposure to times of need and times of plenty. It involves a regular struggle to believe that Christ is enough.
  • Contentment flows from union with and reliance on Christ (v. 13).
  • The phrase “all things” must be governed by the context. The context is about contentment and material possessions. The NIV translates it well: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength”
  • Paul is showing us that contented Christians haven’t made this world their home. They have found contentment somewhere else, in Someone else!

Things to consider this coming week.

Your life should be free from the love of money. Be satisfied with what you have, for He Himself has said, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” (Heb 13: 5)

Because I'm Happyyyyyyyy!

When it comes to contentment, I think all of us have areas that we can work on. Some of us right want more stuff, a bigger house, better food, or nicer clothes. We thought it would be fun to play with this ridiculous idea of "Super Size Me." We want kids to wonder what it would be like if they got everything they ever wanted. Especially, when we, as adults, know that getting everything you could ever want isn't all it's cracked up to be. When God gives you what you need, you can be content with what you have and be generous to others in return.
