The Weekend
It has arrived, the weekend; Resurrection Weekend! Over the past 26+yrs, I have come to love our out-spoken, passionate, and eclectic cul-de-sac that we live on in MidTown Memphis. Our neighborhood represents a varying amount of social, political, and moral views. And yet, when looking at the larger Memphis community, particularly MidTown, our neighborhood fits right in.
It is safe to assume that adhered to in our cul-de-sac are the two major faiths in the Mid-South; the Jewish and Christian faith. The seven-day week that concludes this Sunday has significant meaning for both those faiths. While reflecting on Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and Mark 12:29-31, I have recalled our community and our cul-de-sac. My wife and I have made this neighborhood and community our home. I share my love of this neighborhood out of the satisfaction of knowing that we are blessed to raise three children on our cul-de-sac. Likewise, I'm convicted because as part of this "Holy Week," Christ responded regarding a question about the greatest commandment; "This is the most important," Jesus answered: Listen, Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is One. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. "The second is: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other command greater than these." Mark 12:29-31
The weather, the numerous community events, and Holy Week observations make this the perfect time to engage your neighbors this weekend. Say hello as they pass your home, invite them to our playground dedication and extend the invitation to attend Easter morning services. Just because people have not been attending regularly does not mean that they will not be welcomed on Sunday. When you extend the invitation, let them know that a socially distanced pew will be waiting for them.
