Farewell

On Sunday, we will be reading from 1 Samuel 12:1-25. Chapter 12 reminds us of the importance of obedience to God and the consequences of disobedience. This passage marks a pivotal moment in Israel's history as they transition from being ruled by judges to having a king. This is one of Israel's most significant moments—the end of the loose confederation of judges and the beginning of the Israelite monarchy. From this point forward, the nation would be evaluated in terms of whether the king did good or evil in the eyes of the Lord.

Samuel, the prophet and judge of Israel, had faithfully served God and the people for many years. He was now old and had appointed his sons as judges to assist him in his duties. However, they did not follow in their father's footsteps and were corrupt, taking bribes and perverting justice. As a result, the people of Israel became discontented and demanded a king to rule over them like other nations.

If you recall, Samuel warned the people that having a king would come at a cost, and they would lose their freedom and become servants to the king. Despite Samuel's warning, the people insisted on having a king, and God granted their request. Saul was chosen as the first king of Israel.

In Chapter 12, Samuel addresses the people after Saul's coronation and reminds them of God's faithfulness and their disobedience. He points out that God had delivered them from slavery in Egypt, protected them from their enemies, and appointed judges to lead them. However, the people had disobeyed God by demanding a king and turning away from Him.

Samuel also calls for a demonstration of God's power to show the people the error of their ways. He asks God to send thunder and rain, which God does, causing the people to fear and acknowledge their wrongdoing.

Samuel then encourages the people to serve God faithfully, obeying His commands and serving Him with all their hearts. He reminds them that God is always faithful to His promises and that they will be blessed as long as they follow Him.

Friends, this passage has important lessons for us today. First, it reminds us that obedience to God is crucial if we are to receive or desire His blessings. It also warns us of the dangers of disobedience and turning away from God. We must be careful not to demand our own ways but instead, seek God's will and follow His commands.

Like the people of Israel, God has blessed us, and it is our responsibility to honor Him with our lives and actions. We must serve Him faithfully, obey His commands, and trusting in His unfailing love and faithfulness.

Let us pray that God will help us to be obedient and faithful servants, always seeking His will and following His commands. May we never forget the lessons of 1 Samuel 12 and always strive to honor and glorify our Lord and Savior. Amen.
