Learn

This week, we continue our "Together" series by focusing on the theme of learning. Proverbs 1:5 reminds us of the value of ongoing growth:

“Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.”

This verse highlights the lifelong journey of learning, especially when it comes to the wisdom found in God’s Word. In Acts 2:41-44, we see that the early church prioritized learning together as they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching. They knew that a deep understanding of God’s truth would strengthen their faith and guide their lives.

As we study these passages, we’ll see why gathering together to learn is essential for the church and how it impacts us today. Here are five reasons why learning together as a community is crucial, along with supporting Scriptures to show the significance of this shared journey.

Learning Together Builds a Foundation of Wisdom (Proverbs 1:5)

  • Proverbs 1:5 encourages us to “hear and increase in learning,” highlighting that wisdom is something we build over time. Learning in community provides the structure and support we need to grow consistently in God’s wisdom.

  • James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him.” When we gather to learn together, we collectively seek God’s wisdom, deepening our understanding of His character and His ways.

  • The first believers in Acts 2 were devoted to the apostles’ teaching, knowing they needed a foundation of truth to stand firm in their faith. For us, learning together strengthens our spiritual foundation and helps us grow in wisdom, both individually and as a church community.

Learning Together Deepens Our Understanding of Scripture (Acts 2:42)

  • Acts 2:42 describes how the early church “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching.” They were passionate about understanding God’s Word and living by it. By gathering to learn, they gain a clearer picture of who God is and how they should respond to Him.

  • Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” God’s Word guides us, and learning together brings clarity and depth. In community, we benefit from each other’s insights, questions, and experiences, which help us see aspects of Scripture we might miss on our own.

  • As we learn together, we gain deeper insight into God’s commands and promises, equipping us to walk confidently in His truth.

Learning Together Fosters Unity and Mutual Encouragement (Hebrews 10:24-25)

  • Learning together creates a sense of unity, as we all come to know the same God, follow the same Savior, and grow in the same Spirit. This unity strengthens the church and encourages us to support each other in our spiritual journeys.

  • Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages believers to “consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together…but encouraging one another.” When we gather to learn, we lift each other, strengthening our faith and motivating one another to live out what we’ve learned.

  • The early church “held all things in common” (Acts 2:44), which resulted directly from their shared learning and commitment to the Word. For us, learning together builds a spirit of unity, where we are bonded by our shared pursuit of God’s wisdom and truth.

Learning Together Helps Us Grow in Spiritual Maturity (Ephesians 4:11-13)

  • Learning God’s Word together is crucial for our spiritual growth, helping us mature in our faith and become more like Christ. Ephesians 4:11-13 explains that God gave the church “apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds, and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.”

  • When we learn together, we benefit from the gifts God has given to others within the church—teachers, mentors, and those with spiritual wisdom—who help equip us and encourage us to grow. This shared learning process brings us closer to Christ and prepares us to walk in faith and love.

  • The early church devoted itself to the apostles’ teaching (Acts 2:42), and it shaped them into a mature, unified body. Today, learning together builds us up as a community, helping us grow in faith and Christlikeness as we learn from and encourage one another in our spiritual journey.

Learning Together Keeps Us Rooted in Truth and Protects Us from False Teaching (Colossians 2:6-8)

  • Learning God’s Word together keeps us grounded in His truth in a world full of competing voices and beliefs. Colossians 2:6-8 warns us, “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition… and not according to Christ.”

  • By gathering to study Scripture, we help discern truth from error, holding each other accountable to God’s Word and avoiding the influence of misleading teachings.

  • The early believers faced challenges to their faith, and the apostles’ teaching helped keep them rooted in the gospel. Today, learning together ensures that our beliefs are firmly grounded in Scripture, equipping us to stand firm in our faith and recognize what aligns with God’s Word.

The Significance of Learning Together: A Call to the Church Today

Learning God’s Word in community is vital to the church’s strength and health. As we gather to study Scripture, we grow in wisdom, deepen our understanding, encourage one another, become equipped for ministry, and stay rooted in truth. Just as the early church devoted itself to the apostles’ teaching, we are called to prioritize learning together.

In Proverbs 1:5, we see the call to continually grow in wisdom, and in Acts 2:41-44, we see the power of shared learning in the life of the church. Today, we are invited to follow their example, gathering as a community to learn and grow together in faith. When we prioritize learning as a church, we build a foundation that not only strengthens us but also empowers us to be a light in the world.
